Software Packages

Software is a program that allows a user to create and manipulate an digital graphic images. Graphics software programs are commonly distinguished by whether they are primarily oriented toward painting, drawing, or image editing.

The Two pieces of software that I am going to be discussing are Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Paint.

Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is a very popular piece of software within the graphics design field. Adobe Creative are the publishers of this software and have created the newest version of Adobe Photoshop Cs6. This version has a lot of new features in comparison to older versions of the software such as Adobe Photoshop Cs5. Adobe Photoshop saves files in a .PSD format however it is possible to save the final image to a different image format such as .JPEG. Adobe Photoshop works very well with devices such as a graphics tablet. This software has many advanced features that can be useful for a person within the digital graphics field such as adding filters, etc. The key tools in Adobe Photoshop are very effective as you can manipulate and change images in many different ways, for example blurring an image and removing or changing the background.

Adobe Photoshop it's not very user friendly unless you know what your doing which is a downfall for this software package because for a beginer you will need to spend a some amount of time with it for example trying to use different effects, changing the size of the image etc. Also with adobe Photoshop it has compatability issues with older versions of photoshop and on anything other than Windows.

In Photoshop there is a sidebar with a variety of tools with multiple image-editing functions appears to the left of the screen. These tools typically fall under the categories of drawing, painting, measuring and navigation,  selection, typing and retouching.

Cropping

Adobe Photoshop's crop tool can be used to select a particular area of an image and discard the portions outside of the chosen section. This tool assists in creating a focus point on an image and excluding unnecessary space. The cropping tool allows you to crop an image in a square or rectangular shape. There is also a free handed crop tool which allows you to crop the image free handed.

Microsoft Paint

One of the most common painting programs in Microsoft Windows OS is the included Microsoft Paint. This is mostly used for creating and modifying simple images. Paint would not have as many tools as Photoshop but can still be used in many different ways to adjust images and change various different things the tools i have listed above are only a few of the tools this package offers, this package also has limitation and these would be the limited amount of tools available for manipulating images. The quality of the images can also sometimes be worse when used in paint.

The program comes with the following options in its Tool Box:

  • Free-Form Select
  • Select
  • Eraser/Color Eraser
  • Fill With Color
  • Pick Color
  • Magnifier
  • Pencil
  • Brush
  • Airbrush
  • Text
  • Line
  • Curve
  • Rectangle
  • Polygon
  • Ellipse
  • Rounded Rectangle
